KUNG FU
Self-Defence - Health - Philosophy

The Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu Club has direct lineage to Northern Shaolin Kung Fu monasteries in Northern China. The Shaolin Kung Fu styles are defined by North and South because of the way the styles evolved on different terrain. Northern China is predominantly more dry and therefore the ground more solid. The Southern region receives a lot more rainfall and therefore the ground is muddier. The dry terrain allowed for more stability while kicking where fighting in the mud of the Southern region require more hand strikes to compensate for terrain. So Northern styles kicking more than southern styles and Southern styles utilized hands more.

Mark Fabris

Mark started training at age 16 and excelled quickly thru the system with natural ability and lots of energy. He never missed a class and showed dedication by daily practice. Mark quickly became one of Sifu Purnell’s best students reaching the level of 5th degree in the Seven Star System. Mark was awarded the honor of Assistant Instructor and began sharing his knowledge with the other students.

After 17 years of training Mark moved to Calgary for work and family but continued to show unparallel dedication by commuting weekly to Red Deer for class. Mark continued to assist and train with Sifu Purnell for some time from Calgary. Sifu and the club extend a heartfelt appreciation and thanks for everything Mark did for the club. We miss Mark’s humor, example of dedication and knowledge. He is an inspiration to all of the students that knew him.

Mark has taken his dedication to martial arts to the next level travelling abroad searching for the roots of Kung Fu and Buddhism at a Yoga Asram in India.
